I just enjoyed the finishing touch to a great meal with some delicious ruby red, sweet watermelon. As a boy growing up in Oklahoma, it was often a family event to stop by the town warehouse that housed a walk-in cooler to pick up a cold watermelon.
I remember going inside the walk-in cooler and seeing shelf after shelf all lined with what seemed like perfectly round, dark green watermelon. Each one was plugged so the buyer could peek at the bright red fruit at the center before making their purchase.
Not only were these events a relief from the summer heat but a teachable moment on the commerce of how things worked in our small town.
The watermelon excursion I vividly remember happened during the summer when my mother was pregnant with my brother. I remember walking into the cooler to pick a melon and one of the attendants said, “Hey kid, looks like your mother already swallowed a watermelon seed.” Everyone chuckled at the puzzled look on my face. I thought she was going to have a baby, not a watermelon!
While grief is no laughing matter, people still say the strangest things when it comes to a person’s loss. My favorite is that “time heals all wounds” which, of course, is neither helpful nor true. Many of these comments are made by people who are trying to be helpful. Others are simply repeating what well-meaning people said to them when they experienced a difficult loss.
Th good news is that when my brother was born, he was neither green nor did he bear any resemblance to a watermelon. The truth was revealed! However, when it comes to grief, we often never learn the truth of how to go beyond the losses we have experienced.
At The Grief & Wellness Group, we have the privilege of walking each person with a broken heart through very specific steps that help them move on after a significant loss. We provide tools to help the person resolve their pain so they can retain the joy of any pleasant memories that may exist.
