Once upon a time a group of concerned parents and leaders of the forest got together and formed a committee to decide how to best educate their children. Their purpose was to provide something meaningful to equip their children for the new world. Finally, with a newly acquired government grant they were able to implement their plan to start a school.
So, the committee adopted an activity curriculum of running, climbing, swimming, and flying. They decided to put the Labrador retriever in charge since he showed such enthusiasm and encouragement for others. To make the administration of the curriculum easier, they decided all the animals should enroll in all the subjects.
The duck was an excellent swimmer. In fact, the duck was better at swimming than the instructor, the Labrador retriever. However, the duck was only average at flying and did very poorly at running and climbing.
Since the duck was so poor at running, he was required to spend extra time practicing running. The additional practice caused his feet to develop sores, which caused his performance in his other classes to suffer. In the end, the duck became only average at swimming and felt he could no longer continue to run.
Soon the duck became depressed and grief stricken at the loss of his ability to do anything well. He completely dropped out of school and spent his time playing video games all day long.
The rabbit was at the head of his class in running. But was constantly frustrated while trying to fly. As a result, the rabbit became so neurotic he was placed on meds and developed a nervous twitch in his legs.
The muscle cramps in his legs caused the rabbit to suffer the loss of his spot on the swim team and, ultimately, he ended up failing the class. Miserably sad, the rabbit began to isolate himself from all his friends and began using his meds to numb his emotional pain.
The squirrel excelled in climbing but was constantly frustrated in his flying class. He couldn’t understand why he always had to start from the ground up instead of soaring from treetop to treetop. As a result, the squirrel developed “Charlie Horses” from overexertion and only received a C in climbing and a D in running. The disappointment in his grades, coupled with the fact he blamed himself for his parents wanting to get a divorce, created such a depth of despair, he didn’t know what to do.
The eagle was a complete problem child. He never did what he was told and kept trying to get the rabbit and the squirrel to come to his house for dinner. He was expelled for his bullying tactics.
The parents and leaders were nearly out of their grant money so they decided to hire a consultant, the Wise Owl, to see if they could figure out how to address the grief their children were now facing. The Owl assured them he could help and together they headed down the winding path into the forest. After spending time with the Wise Owl, they left with smiles on their faces and new strategies to help their hurting children.
As a parent, teacher or concerned leader, perhaps you, too, have observed the challenges your children are facing and perhaps you, too, have longed for an effective strategy to help them.
The Grief and Wellness Group and Grace Community Church are hosting a 1 ½ hour workshop to give parents, teachers, and others who work with children important information on how to help children deal with their grief.
Just as the Wise Owl gathered all the interested parents and teachers in the forest and gave them some sage advice and tips on how to help children cope with losses that come unexpectedly into their young lives, you won’t want to miss attending this special event.
So, if you are a parent with young children, a Sunday School teacher, public or private school teacher who works with children, you need this important information that will help you effectively deal with the kids you care so much about.
