Recognizing the Invisible Pain

The emotional pain of a broken heart often goes unnoticed by the casual observer and sometimes even those close to you. It leaves no physical scars, no open wounds visible to the naked eye, no broken bones, or spilled blood. Still, the hurt is real to the one who has suffered loss. Internal emotional scars often prove to be the most painful and left incomplete can become completely destructive in the life of a griever.

If you are reading this article, chances are you or someone you love has suffered loss and is currently grieving. “Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss of any kind.”1 Your grief can be the reaction to a recent pain to your heart, or something that occurred many years ago.

Just four months after my step-dad died unexpectedly in 2001, I began to have excruciating pain in my neck, back and shoulders. I also experienced headaches and had difficulty sleeping. I went to a doctor and his first question was, “Have you experienced any major stress or loss in your life recently.” Shocked I said, “Yes!” and I listed them off.

I was extremely close to my step-dad and the loss of having him in my life was like a bullet to my chest. In addition to his death, my husband and I had moved our family across state lines leaving close friends; we had both started new jobs; and we had sold an old home and bought a new one. To put it into terms of loss, I had lost a father to death, the place we called home, a job I enjoyed, daily interaction with friends I loved, and the hopes, dreams and expectations of what life would be like living near my mom and dad again. The doctor was able to treat my physical symptoms but he had no way to help with my broken heart.

I was dumbfounded at my loss of how to handle grief and loss in my own life and surprised to find that no one knew how to respond to my grief in a way that made me feel better. As a society we don’t know how to help each other complete the losses in our lives and say good-bye to the pain and hurt that we have suffered.

I am so thankful to have found relief and recovery for my broken heart; and you can too. Call the Grief and Wellness Group today and take your first steps toward healing your broken heart.
