“He who has overcome his fears will truly be free!”
WOW, that’s a great definition! Short and to the point. Aristotle explains exactly how to truly be free. Now. . . evidently it involves taking some kind of action (that’s the overcoming-part) in order to not be afraid anymore (that’s the fear part) of both your past and your future. Hmm, so defining our personal freedom is a great start, but then every day we encounter change and tragedy and loss in our lives. Many of those losses are life-changing, including death, divorce, and health; also, loss of pets, careers and many, many others. When we’re blind-sided by major loss it results in feelings of anxiety and grief. In other words, our sense of personal freedom is under emotional attack!
“I never knew grief felt so much like fear!” ~C.S. Lewis
Often grief from loss feels exactly like fear! Let me tell you about Beth, a young friend of mine who has finally been able to experience true freedom this summer! Beth experienced many years of abuse and pain in her young marriage. She fought daily for her health and her safety, as well as the safety of her children. Several years ago, Beth was able to fight for a divorce and safely move across country. Thankfully she found a new job and started a whole new life with her boys. Beth credits her parents, her friends and a strong faith for the courage to make new, good choices, choices that allowed her to conquer many of her fears. Now recently Beth let me know that her Grief Recovery work was instrumental in restoring a feeling of freedom in her life. Grief Recovery is a feel-better, emotional/action process. Beth now has a new sparkle in her eyes and a beautiful smile on her face!
As a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, I’m honored to facilitate a grief recovery process that results in true personal freedom! Recovery takes small steps of hard work, an investment of time, a revisiting of emotional pain and a desire to feel better. Feeling better is a simple definition of recovery! Overwhelmingly, our Grief Recovery clients tell us that after doing the tough work (taking action) on their past and current losses (their fears), they experience TRUE freedom for the future!
Wishing you and your family a wonderful 4th of July! May we all celebrate our freedoms this year: our Memorial Day freedom, won by those who fought and gave their lives; our Veteran’s Day freedom, for all who’ve served and currently serve in the Armed Forces to keep us safe; and finally, our Flag Day freedom that visually reminds us we’re blessed with opportunities for our personal freedoms each and every day!
