Here Comes Summer!

It’s almost here! Are you excited? Just one more page on my wall calendar and summer will be here! Now, I need to tell you, I’m a sunshine-kind-of-gal! I ‘need’ the sun, the warmth of the sun, and a tan, of course! (Thankfully, I now live in Arizona where the sunshine has replaced my Vitamin D gummies.)  But, growing up in Indiana I quickly learned I could never really count on ‘sunshine and lollipops,’ even in the summertime.

For example, my kindergarten picnic was rained out, never to be rescheduled! My annual swimming lessons at the park were cancelled, almost every summer, due to thunderstorms or tornado warnings. And, IF my swimming lessons weren’t cancelled, you could find me backstroking in 38-degree weather while turning a very strange shade of blue. Many years later, my May wedding had to be moved indoors due to a forecast of 100% humidity which promised torrential rain and flooding! Once again, my sunny expectations were disappointed by stormy weather and most of all, my ‘lack of control’ over the good and bad circumstances in my daily life!

One of my Indiana summers brought much more than bad weather. I call it my ‘Summer of Discontent,’ but as a teenage girl, it was so much more.  It was a cloudy August day, but for once the weather didn’t matter. I had made the coveted high school cheerleading team and could not wait to tell my mom! I ran home that day, pushed open the screen door and finally found my mom.  But before I could share my news, she walked toward me, sobbing uncontrollably, with news of her own. She handed me a letter that I recognized as my dad’s handwriting.  One hand-written page telling my mom, my sister and me that my dad was leaving our family. You see, there was another woman, another city, another lifestyle he wanted and bottom line, he wanted a quick divorce.

As you can imagine, the major losses from that one particular summer were life-changing. That summer stretched into a season of devastation, years of tears, and a loss of trust that only in recent years benefited from grief recovery actions. Have you ever experienced a time period of loss and emotional disappointments? Are you currently struggling through a season of major loss and devastation? When life circumstances are out of our control due to death, divorce or other losses, we want/need ‘some control’ back!  As a Grief Recovery Specialist, I’m honored to facilitate an action process for many hurting people. The Grief Recovery Method allows grievers, just like it allowed me, to invest time and take action in order to move forward toward emotional freedom. It was through The Grief Recovery Method I experienced emotional recovery for my future.  Ultimately it also gave me the passion to help others grieve their losses.

As summer approaches, I’m reminded of my mom and clichés she used years ago. She said, “Into each life some rain must fall!” and “Linda, life is no picnic, you know!”  Her words still ring true for me today. We ALL experience disappointment, lost hopes and dreams, but taking action toward grief recovery gives us some control over the rain at the picnic.

Wishing you a super summer!

The Value of a Good Hug

Hugging is a real bargain, and the secret behind it is that it releases a chemical into our bodies called OXYTOCIN, often referred to as one of the happy drugs our bodies naturally produces.

Megan Friedman says, “Dogs and humans have a very special relationship, where dogs have hijacked the human oxytocin bonding pathway that is normally reserved for our babies.”

Hugging is Healthy
Oxytocin is a miracle drug produced naturally by our bodies.  It helps our body’s immune system, helps keep us healthier, and helps cure depression.   Oxytocin reduces stress, helps improve sleep patterns, and can be highly rejuvenating.

Impact on Babies
A great many studies have been made on the effects of human contact on newborn babies.  Creating a healthy and happy newborn will be highly dependent on receiving touch from other people.

Newborns who are touched gently and regularly gain weight and grow at a better rate than those babies who lack such contact.  Premature babies are generally released from the hospital sooner than those who are not touched regularly.  Human cuddling, gentle massaging, soothing stroking of the child’s head will create a psychological and physically well-developed person.  Guess why God made babies so doggone cute; so we would naturally want to cuddle with them.

Babies who don’t receive human contact in the early days of life often suffer from health problems and can exhibit a failure to thrive – a condition frequently seen in orphanages where babies often do not receive enough human contact.

Impact on Adults
So, what is the impact of oxytocin on adults?  To know how powerful oxytocin is for adults you need to know that the opposing hormone your body naturally produces will take over if not enough oxytocin is produced. The opposite hormone is Cortisol, also known as the fight or flight drug.  You need to realize what cortisol’s impact on your body is in order to understand the importance of oxytocin.

Cortisol (remember, the fight of flight chemical) is produced when your boss takes you to task, or you have a blowout argument with a loved one (i.e. spouse, child  or sibling); any number of things that can cause this helpful hormone to be over-produced in your body.  Not surprising is that cortisol can be extremely overproduced during the grieving process, another very stressful time.

This cortisol frequently runs unnaturally high as a result of your stress-filled life and is known to cause all kinds of long-term health problems.  This can be very deceiving since an elevated level of cortisol will often allow you to be ultra-productive, while at the same time robbing you of much needed sleep and keeping you wired an excessive amount of the time.

SO, oxytocin is given to all of us to offset and neutralize the effects and provide us with that relaxed feeling, you know, the one you get after intimacy – oxytocin, also known as the LOVE HORMONE.  News Flash: You can’t restore healthy adrenal function without balancing cortisol.

Maybe this has been too scientific for your taste.  If so, just remember:  Hugging is all natural.  It is organic and sweet. It has no pesticides, no preservatives, no artificial sweeteners and is 100 percent wholesome.

Hugging is the perfect accessory.  There is no assembly required, very few moving parts and no batteries to replace. It is non-taxable, non-polluting, and non-fattening.  Low-energy is required with high returns!

Hugging is thief-proof, 100 percent returnable, and above all, releases oxytocin into your body.

HUGGING IS THE PERFECT GIFT SO, SHUT UP AND HUG SOMEONE.
